Well, I’m not going to lie to you, I’ve lived a charmed life and I plan to keep it that way! I’ve been fortunate to find myself in place and time that allowed me to find a career that I not only love, but has allowed me to see and do so many things that most people just dream about or read in a magazine. I’ve been to the summit of Denali at 20,320 feet and the bottom of Death Valley at -280 feet, and ten thousand places in between and beyond.
For a real job, as they call it, I work at The Canyons in Park City, UT as the Director of Ski Patrol. I’ve been working there most of my adult life and as far as jobs go, it’s tough to beat. For a little light reading about work, check this out. I once read a hat that said “My job is better than your vacation” and I think I have to agree. I get paid to ski, ride my bike, and play disc golf. I get every good powder day and all of the bad ones too. I am given the opportunity to get people out of tricky places and situations, I get to meet people from all over the world, I work with a bunch of truly amazing people and the mountains are my office. What more could you ask for?
When I’m not working at The Canyons, I’m working for AAI, WBR, or myself doing something or other involving avalanches, avalanche dogs or avalanche rescue. Sometimes it blows my mind that people pay me for this. I have so much fun out in the field with students and had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the legendary avalanche guru’s in North America. I hope I’ve taught my students a quarter of what they taught me.
Somehow, in between all that work I still find time to bag a peak here and there, ski some backcountry powder, wander the Utah deserts, ride my bikes, and take my Tiger for long walks around the Western US. None of this would be any fun without the companionship and understanding of my two crazy dogs, Wookie and Heeley.
So I hope you find something here that amazes, entertains, or teaches you something.
