Dirt roads, mountain air and desert sand: An amazing summer of adventure and fun

November 2, 2011

Feels like summer only started in July and here I am getting my skis ready for snow, dusting off my avalanche talks and thinking about putting the bikes away for winter.  Holding out hopes for one last desert rally next week, a solo attempt to link up a bunch of roads I’ve been checking out on maps for years.  Stay tuned for that one.  Anyway, as a send off to an epic summer 2011 I put together this little slide show to celebrate and remember the good times I shared with my closest friends in the last four months.  Enjoy!

As you venture out into the mountains and the snow starts to pile up, don’t forget to check the avalanche advisory and remember, like all things, skills get rusty over the summer – including rescue, route finding and skiing so be careful out there.  See you out there somewhere I’m sure.

New project on the horizon

First Test new toys

So I picked up a 2005 Honda CRF450X dirt bike. I am on a mission to turn it into my ultimate off-road adventure bike, for multi day self-support bike trips. I figure this project will carry me through the summer with an early fall trip starting to take shape. The first exploratory ride in the Swell is under my belt and the wheels are spinning 1000 miles an hour in my head about the possibilities!

Stay Tuned…

The Chute

The Chute on Muddy Creek from Jake Hutchinson on Vimeo.

Water was up, had to knock it off the list. Heeley made a mistake in the lower chute and flipped the boat on a wall. Destroyed the camera, luckily the card survived.

Needed a fresh perspective…

pictographs in McKee Springs A quick post as I’m running out the door to Tahoe for the week.  Life had gotten a little off track this summer.  Too much work, too much pain, not enough adventure and exploration.  So I picked a spot on the map.  Put the girls in the Truck and went exploring with a friend.  Split Mountain was the original destination and we just started wandering from there.  Dirt roads into Wyoming and Colorado revealed amazing sights I never imagined in that part of the country.  It helps to recharge the batteries and return to work with renewed vigor.  I put up a set of pics on my Flickr Site which you can jump to right here:

Dinosaur National Monument Exploring

Hope to spend some time finishing up the story of creating 300+ acres of ski terrain from a blank canvas this week.  Cheers!  JMH
