Needed a fresh perspective…

October 17, 2010

pictographs in McKee Springs A quick post as I’m running out the door to Tahoe for the week.  Life had gotten a little off track this summer.  Too much work, too much pain, not enough adventure and exploration.  So I picked a spot on the map.  Put the girls in the Truck and went exploring with a friend.  Split Mountain was the original destination and we just started wandering from there.  Dirt roads into Wyoming and Colorado revealed amazing sights I never imagined in that part of the country.  It helps to recharge the batteries and return to work with renewed vigor.  I put up a set of pics on my Flickr Site which you can jump to right here:

Dinosaur National Monument Exploring

Hope to spend some time finishing up the story of creating 300+ acres of ski terrain from a blank canvas this week.  Cheers!  JMH

Temple of the Sun

September 5, 2010

Temple of the Sun Took a quick two day trip down to central Utah with the dogs.  Been wanting to check out northern Capital Reef and Caineville Wash for quite sometime.  Had the dogs so most of my exploration was of the four-wheel variety, they are just getting too old to wander the desert all day anymore…  Anyway we went in from Highway 70 just south of where Highway 10 intersects it.  A pretty mellow road by my standards led us through the Last Chance Anticline and down into Cathedral Valley.  We wandered over towards the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Moon and Glass Mountain.  Glass Mountain is a large Gypsum mound that is twisted and turned and unlike anything else in the area.

We ventured down through Hanksville and then towards Hans Flat to find a place to camp.  After Wookie made a slight map reading error, we were stopped in the dark by a washed out road.  Turning around in the sand and rocks in the dark was entertaining to say the least.  After getting back on top, we cut our losses and called it a night.  Quick Dinner of Salami and cheese and off to bed. … Read the remainder of this entry »

Working too much

Building new Iron Mountain Trails

the 400 clearing trees for an as yet unnamed trail on Iron Mountain

So it’s been a long time.  Work, life changes, enjoying my summer have all played into me not spending much time at the computer.  I still have a trip report to finish and a number of other things I’d like to get off the ground,  my avalanche dog blog is in serious need of finishing before the snow flies and I need to revmap my main site before we take off for the teaching season.

Anyway, I’ve been spending the majority of my time as the Project Manager for the Iron Mountain expansion lift at The Canyons.  I am getting ready to post on the entire process to date, needless to say it’s been hard work, challenging and fun.  Check back in the next few days for the story so far.
